[Tamaki 1 @ Sommerville Special School] CULTURAL CELEBRATIONS - TAMAKI 1

Sommerville Special School pride themselves in celebrating the cultural diversity of our students.  This term, we have celebrated Matariki ( Maori New Year) and Tongan Language Week.  Staff and students have taken part in Waiata (song) and dance (kanikani). These are some of the highlights of our celebrations;

This is our Maori Flag

Our classes all participated in our own waiata and dance for the Whanau (family)

Tamaki Primary came over to perform for us.

Tamaki 1 performed a poi waiata & were awesome at swinging the poi!

The library was decorated with Maori art from classes at Tamaki & Sommerville.  We also had a 'hakari', (Celebratory luncheon) for the whanau.

TONGAN LANGUAGE WEEK
Our Tongan Community at the school graciously put on a luncheon for staff & students to share some of their culture through food and music.
This is the flag of Tonga
This is the traditional dress for men in Tonga
This is a Tongan performance.
We have all been spoiled with different cultural performances and food.  Thank you so much to all staff involved in our cultural experiences!
Donna Ryan made a speech thanking the Tongan Whanau for sharing their traditional food.
We all enjoyed the kai (food) that was provided.  We were all so full after!

Congratulations to Rebecca Dubber who won bronze medal in her backstroke race and Anna Grimaldi who won a gold medal in the long jump. It was so cool watch live at the fan zone.

This month's topic is "Managing Tantrums / Intense Emotions - for ourselves as parents and in our children".  Our speaker is Marion Doherty, Clinical Pscyhologist, Co-ordinator of Kari Centre, Infant Mental Health Services and ECLIPS.

Parents bringing up children/young people with Autism and or any disability are often under a lot of stress and find it hard to manage behavioural issues and tantrums.

This month we have invited Marion to speak about understanding and de-escalating tantrums, including strategies to help parents cope with when faced with such stressful situations.  Marion takes a hands-on approach to delivering her presentations and parents will really enjoy her session full of sensible and practical ideas that have been proven to work.

For catering purposes it is important to register for this meeting. You can register by emailing Disability Connect admin@disabilityconnect.org.nz or asoka@disabilityconnect.org.nz.  You can also phone 09 636 0351 or text Asoka 027 457 8571 to book over the phone.
