Breaking the Ball Barrier by Bradley Edgewater3

On Tuesday the 11th of March, we went to the Tamaki Recreation Centre to watch the famous NZ Breakers. When we first entered the gym, there were a lot of students from other schools including Sommerville Special School sitting along the sides of the basketball court. The students were eagerly waiting for the basketball team to come in.

While we were waiting for the players to come, one of the people who organized the event picked a few volunteers to play a game. They were challenged to shoot a basketball into the hoop, if they got the ball through the hoop, they would win the ball. Among some of those picked were Aidan and Nathan, and they were very happy that they won.

When the NZ Breakers arrived, some of the students from other schools who were there were chosen to have a go at playing against the Breakers, including Allan and Fynn from our class. At the end of the games, despite losing against the players, the students were very happy they had played against a famous basketball team.

After playing the games against the Breakers, we played another game in which the students had to decide whether one of the Breakers players would either miss the basketball hoop or  manage to get the ball into the hoop.

At the end of the session, each student received a handbook that explained about the biography of the NZ Breakers. We were really excited when we were given a chance to get autographs signed by the players themselves.

It was a very memorable day for the students to watch the players up close and to have a taste of what it is like to play with a famous team.

Spotty Day by Howick Intermediate

Today Friday 28th March here at Howick Intermediate we participated in the ‘Go Spotty’ Mufti Day to raise awareness of this terrible disease that is affecting over 4000 kiwis every year.
The idea is to get everyone wearing something spotty or dotty to get people thinking about melanoma and checking their skin for ‘spots’ or signs that could lead to melanoma later on in life.
In our class Leya was the Spotiest!!!
We had planned games that we orgnised for ourselves.
It was a fun day for a worthy cause.
